Unending Maze

Author:

Arshia Mahanta

BOOKBELL (2016)

This is a comprehensive anthology of 28 poems by young Arshia Mahanta, a budding bard, who is making an attempt to decipher the unending labyrinth of her world of imagination through poetry. ‘Unending Maze’ is the young author’s debut collection of poems. All the poems which have been published as part of the anthology are endowed with a high level of passion. The poet’s treatment of different imagery and symbolic representations are highly commendable.

The book also has a good introduction which explains the poetic world of the poet. All the poems are deeply analysed in this introduction. Readers, in particular those who love reading poetry, will be able to perceive and explore the world of a young mind in the form of this verse-collection in English. The collection is now available in all leading bookstores.

Testimony of a Keen Mind

Title:

The Selective Essays of Dr. Bharat Chandra Kalita
Edited:
Hemanta Dhing Mazumdar and Dr. Juri Bharat Kalita
Publisher:
Bharatiya Itihas Sankalan Samiti, Assam

The essays in this collection have been compiled from the writings of Dr. Kalita spread out across different publications, traversing a life of academic engagements coupled with his awareness and engagement of topics much beyond the purview of his subject. From issues of security and international ethnic conflict to amusing anecdotes which bear deep meaning, deliberations on philosophical quests to insightful pieces on history, the collection of essays is both an espousal of and a testimony to a keen and insightful mind that grapples and reconciles with issues and thoughts of dizzying diversity, yet managing to render proper justice through his balanced, yet personal treatment of the matter.
Naturally, writings on history and those centered around Assam and the Northeast forms the dominant thread running through the volume; however his time spent at the National Defence Academy as the Head of its Department of History and his own expertise in military history tempers his selection of topics as well as the treatment of the same. However, it would be naive to think that his essays are mere deliberations on military stratagems and the history; rather, they span issues that are both contemporary as well as relevant.
Dr. Kalita's thoughts on democracy and its relevance and significance in the Indian context are especially noteworthy. From advocating a bipolar party system for India to addressing issues which often strike the mind of a layman such as whether to elect a social or party worker, Dr. Kalita’s writings on this aspect show his conscious engagement with the political scenario of India and his objective treatment of the matter for the greater good of the greatest number.
There are also interspersed throughout the volume, interesting pieces which deal with some personal experiences and myriad issues which caught his eye and engaged his mind. Pisciculture, mountaineering and bird watching all find a place in his writings that are, in the truest sense, a microcosmic tour de force into the life and mind of this philosopher-scholar.
(Dr. Bharat Chandra Kalita is an eminent military historian. He retired as the Head of the Department of History, National Defence Academy.)
