New Delhi, Aug 3: The Union Sports Ministry is quite optimistic that Northeast can create more and more quality sportsperson for the country “with proper infrastructure and facilities.”
“Northeast has lots of potential and with proper infrastructure and facility, we can have more and more good sportsmen from the region, said Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel to The Sentinel.
In informed that Sports Ministry is holding special area games schemes in the northeast.
“We are also focusing in the villages, as we all know that there are several potential players in remote areas of the region. More of the under-17 football players are from the northeast,” the sports minister said.
He said that northeast has already have good sportsperson and the number could definitely be increased.
“We are setting up national Sports University in Manipur. This would be a world class university with all modern facilities and infrastructures,” Goel said and added that his ministry is also promoting boxing in the region.
“We are majorly concentrating in the northeast. Honorable Prime Minister has also increased percentage of sports funds by 40 percent…In fact, ever since our government came to the power, we are concentrating much on northeast,” said Goel.
He said that the government is also planning to include sports as a proper curriculum in education.
