Guwahati, Aug 3: All India Congress Committee (AICC) vice-president Rahul Gandhi visited three flood-affected areas of Lakhimpur district on Thursday.
Gandhi arrived at Lilabari Airport in Lakhimpur in the morning, before visiting Amtol, Majgaon and Bogolijan, which were severely affected by the sudden rise in water level of Ranganadi river. The sudden surge was attributed to the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) releasing excess water from its reservoir upstream.
The Congress leader was accompanied by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora, AICC secretary Bhupen Bora and other local Congress leaders.
Gandhi reached the affected areas by boat and interacted with the people briefly. He assured them of raising the issue of floods in Assam in Parliament. Thereafter, he left for Silchar to attend the last rites of former Union Minister Santosh Mohan Dev, who passed away on Wednesday.
