GUWAHATI, Aug 3: The Government of Assam will constitute a Special Investigative Team (SIT) to inquire into the killing of All Bodoland Minority Students Union (ABMSU) president Lafiqul Islam. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced this at a meeting held with the representatives of ABMSU, All Minority Students Union (AMSU) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) at the Brahmaputra State Guest House in the city on Thursday. Sonowal further informed the representatives that the State government would also write to CBI to investigate the case.
The Government of Assam would also provide an ex-gratia relief of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the slain ABMSU leader. An amount of Rs 50,000 would also be provided to Subhankar Chakraborty who received bullet injury in the incident and the State government would bear all his medical expenses, Sonowal stated at the meeting.
Sonowal also informed the meeting that he would take detailed report from Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay about the killing of Islam. Sahay had been rushed to Kokrajhar after the incident.
Condemning the murder of ABMSU president, Sonowal said his government will not tolerate any such incident and appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony.
Reiterating his government’s commitment for ensuring safety and security of the people of Assam, Sonowal said that Dispur would leave no stone unturned to nab the culprits. He also sought cooperation from the people in this regard.
Bodoland Territorial Council chief Hagrama Mohilary stated that BTAD administration would take appropriate steps for employment of the family member of Islam in consultation with the ABMSU and AMSU.
Along with the representatives of ABMSU, AMSU and BPF, Chief Minister’s Media Adviser Hrishikesh Goswami, Legal Adviser Santanu Bharali, Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia, senior police officials and officers of Home Department were present at the meeting.
