Decision on admission only after getting copy of HC ruling: GU VC

BY OUR STAFF REPORTER

Guwahati, July 16: Gauhati University on Sunday asserted that it will try to avoid any delay in admission to its post-graduate courses in view of the Gauhati High Court’s latest order issuing an interim stay on the varsity’s decision to conduct an entrance test for such admission.

Vice Chancellor Mridul Hazarika told The Sentinel on Sunday afternoon that once the GU receives the certified copy of the Gauhati High Court’s order it will take the final decision on its future course of action to conduct the admission into various PG courses. He said the varsity is expected to receive the certified copy of the order by Monday and the decision on PG admission is expected by Tuesday or Wednesday.

“Since I haven’t yet gone through the High Court’s order copy it will be difficult to tell about its implications at this moment. But I want to assure anxious students and parents that the varsity will try its best to conduct admission in time,” Hazarika said.

GU, the oldest university in the Northeast for the first time was going to hold a central entrance test for admission into post-graduate courses from July 20 to July 23. The proposed entrance examination was of two-hour duration, carrying 100 marks. Even though GU’s move faced strong opposition from different quarters, including the AASU, the varsity maintains that the entrance test was being conducted to select the deserving candidates for various post-graduate courses.

A single-judge bench of Gauhati High Court comprising Justice Hrishikesh Roy on Friday put an interim stay on GU’s move in connection with a writ petition - number WP(C) 4125/2017 - filed by Mrinal Kalita and three other students. The petitioners opposed selection on the basis of performance in the entrance examination and made a plea that the present practice of selection based on marks scored in the graduation exams conducted by GU or any other institutes recognized by the university. The High Court has, however, said there is no bar on holding admissions into the GU’s post-graduate courses based on the present system (marks scored in graduation), if it wished. Under the existing admission system, the students from colleges under other universities have to appear in a test conducted by the respective departments of GU.  But students from colleges under GU are given admission directly based on their marks in graduation.
